The three friends met at Hambridgeâs house. Leach was interested to hear that the carpenter had received notification of his appearance before a military tribunal. It was only a matter of time before it was Leachâs turn. Price was still bewailing the fact that heâd captured the man whoâd been painting words on the side of the Ablatt house, only to lose him when a detective intervened. He now knew that the man had been identified and arrested.
âEven Sergeant Keedy could manage that,â he said with a sneer.
âYou canât blame him, Mansel,â said Hambridge. âWhen he saw two people fighting in the dark, he wasnât to know which one was you. You should remember that he was actually there. Just like you, Sergeant Keedy had worked out that the man might come back in the night. If you hadnât got in the way, heâd have nabbed him.â
Price was livid. âI didnât get in the way.â
âYou tried to do the policeâs job for them.â
âHow was I to know that the sergeant was there as well?â
âYou should have had more trust in him.â
âI wanted to get my hands on that sneaky bastard with the paintbrush,â said Price. âYou never know â he might turn out to be the killer as well.â
âThatâs unlikely, Mansel,â said Leach. âIf the police thought theyâd got the right man, heâd have been charged by now and it would have been all over the Evening News. Instead, there was only a mention of that plumber being arrested. I donât think heâs anything to do with the murder.â
âIâd have beaten a confession out of him.â
âHe canât confess to something he didnât do.â
âYou canât solve every problem with your fists, Mansel,â said Hambridge, sternly. âYouâve been in trouble with the police before for doing that. When are you going to learn your lesson?â
Price smouldered. âI canât change the person I am, Fred,â he said. âAt least I was trying to take action. All that Gordonâs been doing is looking for a way to get out of being called up.â
âThatâs not what I was doing at all,â said Leach, vehemently.
âYes, it was.â
âIt was ⦠just one option.â
âI never took you for a coward until now.â
âIâm not a coward,â said Leach, jumping to his feet.
âThen why were you trying to hide behind Ruby?â
âDonât keep on about it!â
âWhat happened to the promise to stick together?â
Leach brandished a fist. âShut up, Mansel!â
âIf you want a fight, you can have it,â said Price, leaping up.
Hambridge got to his feet and pushed them apart. He stared angrily at each of them in turn until they lapsed back into their chairs. Both of them were sulking.
âThatâs the last thing we need,â he warned. âIf we fall out with each other, we all stand to lose.â He sat down beside Price. âItâs unfair to keep on at Gordon. He made a mistake and heâs owned up to it. Heâs not going to get married until he can do it properly in a church. Isnât that right, Gordon?â
Leach puffed his cheeks.
